Every year on Whit Tuesday, pilgrims and spectators from home and abroad gather to take part in a unique cult phenomenon: the Echternach Hopping Procession. This year, on the eve of the procession, in collaboration with our partner the Willibrordus Bauverein and Ciné Sura, two documentaries about this tradition will be shown to you: “Magno Tripudio” (one prays by making big jumps) is a 2009 production by the CNA (Centre national de l’audiovisuel), and the film “Die Echternacher Springprozession” by MR Films from 2019. The first film explains the historical background of the Hopping Procession, while the second film takes a look behind the scenes of the organisation of the Hopping Procession and captures the pilgrims’ point of view. The Echternach Hopping Procession, which was inscribed on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010, and the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall, which was recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2022, are the region’s only two UNESCO recognitions.
